The remote and isolated Gamkaskloof valley in the Little Karoo was first inhabited by farmers in 1830 and was only accessible by foot until 1962 when a road was finally built.  The valley is of ecological, archaelogical and cultural-historical importance and is managed as part of the Swartberg Nature Reserve.

Please take the following into consideration when planning a trip to “Die Hel” :  The kloof is only accessible via 4x4 or high clearance vehicle.  No caravans can be taken into the valley.  There is no place to refuel in or along the way to The Hell.  No Pets, fireworks or firearms are allowed.  Fishing is allowed if you have a valid permit which can be obtained at the reserve office at Ou Plaas.  There is a 3 hour (6 km) interpretive hike and swimming and canoeing in the river are also allowed.  No fauna or flora may be damaged, removed or disturbed in any way.  Solar panels provide lighting in all houses and bush shelter but there are no plug points available.

7 of the original valley cottages have been restored and are run as self-catering houses, with fridges, stoves and hot water. They vary in size, sleeping between four and seven people each. Cutlery and utensils are provided, but you need to bring your own food, towels and toiletries.  Please visit the Cape Nature website for further details.
